'Saint John' is a leather tote bag inspired from the stunning architecture of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Located in Savannah, Ga.
The peaceful air of the Cathedral smells of incense and wax while the silence is what truly envelops s a viewer. Within the architecture and interior there are so many details of meaning and significance. A wandering eye can constantly find new details to linger on and contemplate.
With the 'Saint John' tote it was important the design was elevated to reflect the opulent inspiration of the Church, while maintaining a feel of heritage and ease for daily use.
The process of design started with the line work of the laser etching. I photographed the door handles to the front of the church and later traced over this using Adobe Illustrator. The etching on the totes handle was a detail of the main door enlarged and made to compliment, while adding variation to the main etchings. A linen lining was used for durability as well as maintaining the warm feel of exterior leather.
